Veselka has been serving Ukranian soul food in the East Village since 1954, when it first opened as a candy store and newsstand with only a small counter and a few tables. Today, the menu is a matrimony of American dishes and Ukrainian favorites like borscht, bigos, goulash, and a sort of chose your own pierogi adventure. April Bloomfield introduced New Yorkers to the gastropub when she opened The Spotted Pig with Ken Friedman in 2004. Her menu here as become a template for restaurateurs and chefs opening bar food-inspired restaurants. Deviled eggs and roll mops (herring, pickles, creme fraiche) are a wonderful choice to accompany a late night pint. Bloomfield's knack for Italian is laced throughout the menu and shines with the ricotta gnudi in brown butter and sage. The chargrilled burger with Roquefort and shoestring fries has long been high on the list of the city's best burger.
