The Pines. Tonight. 6pm. Be There.

The highly anticipated new project from the fellows behind Littleneck is opening tonight at 6pm.  The Pines is located at 284 3rd Ave, just two storefronts down from Littleneck, Aaron Lefkove and Andy Curtain's New England-style seafood shack at 288 3rd Ave.  If Littleneck is "of the sea," Lefkove has said, The Pines will be "of the land."  Chef Angelo Romano, formerly of Roberta's, Lupa, and the shortlived Williamsburg hit Maston Lake, has created a concise menu of dishes like squash with house made tofu, smoked tomato, and bottarga, and cavatelli with trotter ragu.  Here's a few pictures of the backyard and bar, chairs were up when we were there but Eater got some great shots of the place all setup and ready for service.

Interview with Rick Lopez and Tom Hyland of Gowanus Wine Merchants

Neighborhoods often develop on the merits of a single street. Brooklyn is no exception. Carroll Gardens has Smith Street, Park Slope has Fifth Avenue, and Gowanus, the transitioning neighborhood in between, has Third Avenue. Rick Lopez and Tom Hyland share a love of wine and a passion for Gowanus, a neighborhood they believe is quickly stepping out from the shadows. Their love has been built into a brick and mortar storefront at 493 Third Ave at the corner of 11th Street. They’ve decided to call it Gowanus Wine Merchants. Digest NY dropped by to chat with the guys about their new store, what they expect when Whole Foods opens seven blocks away, and why people are making so much noise about uncommon grape varieties showing up in the wine world.

Party With The Pines this Saturday

Signs advertising a backyard party this Saturday, August 4th are hanging up in the windows at The PinesThe restaurant's website confirms.  The Pines is the new project from the guys behind neighboring Gowanus storefront Littleneck.  RSVP through info@thepinesbrooklyn.com and get a sneak peek at chef Angelo Romano's cooking.  You can get another peek by dining at Littleneck on Wednesday nights when Angelo is in the kitchen making dishes he plans on serving at The Pines when it opens in September.

The menu for Saturday's party looks to the Caribbean for inspiration: pigeon peas & rice, jerk chicken, and curry goat are part of the $30 ticket price.

There's a New Pickle in Town

photo by craig cavalloShamus Jones started Brooklyn Brine in 2009. Their blog refers to the brand as the "Green Market of pickles." Always a locally driven brand, Brooklyn Brine relied on different commercial spaces around the city to make their products. Jones recently acquired a space in Gowanus and now Brooklyn Brine is a locally driven brand that works exclusively out of 574A President Street, where they make Curried Squash, Moroccan Beans, Chipotle Carrots, and a wide variety of pickles all under one roof.

Some of the pickles at Brooklyn Brine are barrel-fermented, which takes place in spent barrels courtesy of Finger Lakes Distillery. The signature whiskey sour pickles are made in old McKenzie Rye Whiskey barrels. BB currently has gallons of garlic scapes and ramps fermenting that will revealed when the venue begins holding classes in the coming weeks.

Littleneck Guys Adding The Pines to their Roster

Construction is well underway at 284 3rd Avenue in Gowanus.  The address is going to be home to The Pines, the new project from Aaron Lefkove and Andy Curtin of Littleneck, two doors down at 288 3rd Ave.  Their chef, Alan Harding, is working with them on The Pines menu but will ultimately stay in the kitchen at Littleneck.  Roberta's/Lupa/Masten Lake (RIP) alum Angelo Romano will be heading the stoves at The Pines when it opens sometime in July.

Apparently, you can only work with the Littleneck team if your name starts with the letter "A".  Maybe that's why Littleneck is so "Awesome".

The Gowanus Yacht Sets Sail

The Gowanus Yacht Club has opened today for the season.  Boo-yah.  A few new tap lines have been added and in the upcoming weeks $1 oysters (on Tuesday's) and grilled clams will work there way onto the Yacht Club's I-got-a-pocketful-of-singles-where-should-I-eat menu.

Gowanus Whole Foods Finally Happening

The Times brings us the above picture of a once industrial wasteland that will finally become home to a proposed Whole Foods.

Whole Foods bought the 4.2 acres in 2004.  After eight years of community board meetings, reworked plans, and naysaying, The Board of Standards and Appeals finally granted Whole Foods permission to open at 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn.

The Whole Foods will be 56,000 square feet (that's bigger than Eataly!), and reps say shovels will be digging "as soon as possible," according to Brownstoner.
