(100th post!!) O Speedy Romeo, Speedy Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou Speedy Romeo

Speedy Romeo opened in January this year.  Justin Bazdarich is the chef.  He worked for Jean Georges at Perry Street.  His buddy Todd Feldman is the other half of the restaurant, which takes its name from his family's racehorse.  Speedy Romeo is at 376 Classon Avenue in Clinton Hill and they have a pizza called The Saint Louie.  It's got provel, Italian sausage, pepperoni, and pickled chilis.  Slice's Adam Kuban had The Saint Louie on a recent visit and throws the pizza into his Great Eight of 2012.

The D.O.H. Leaves The Little Owl D.O.A.

A sign up at The Little Owl reveals the restaurant closed after a health inspection last night.  A total bummer for the Campanaro Camp, but the hiccup should be resolved by dinner service tomorrow night.

In the meantime, an additional sign up suggests checking out fellow Campanaro restaurant Market Table, around the corner from Little Owl at 54 Carmine Street.

Dekalb Market Springs to Life this Weekend

Dekalb Market will kick off its second year this weekend.  April 7th is the opening date for the revamped market that will include roller derbies, lobster boils, and Sunday dance parties this year.  Sunday will feature easter eggs and $1 mimosa's.

The market also acquired a full liquor license back in February.  This makes for a pretty exciting season for outdoor shoppers, roller skaters, dancers, boozers, and eaters.

It All Started with a Little Chocolate Cake

In 1981 Michel Bras patented his chocolate coulant, the word meaning "runny" in French.  Decades later, the likes of Wal-Mart, Disney World, and Betty Crocker have all created riffs on the dessert.  Issue #3 of Lucky Peach, David Changs magazine published by McSweeney's, has a wonderful article explaining the history of the cake.  The dessert, what Bras has accomplished at his restaurant in Aubrac, and his influence on Basque cuisine, are why many consider Bras one of the most crucial chefs of modern cuisine.

Entre Les Bras, a new documentary by filmmaker Paul LaCoste, explores the relationship between Michel and his oldest son, Sebastien, as Michel prepares to leave Sebastien control of the restaurant.

A Shining Moment for Gwynnett St.

Gwynett St. opened on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg last November.  Justin Hilbert is the chef and he worked with Wylie Dufresne at WD-50 back when Alex Stupak was still around.  His food, and a vision from restaurant proprietor Carl McCoy, have resulted in a glowing two star review from Pete Wells.

Let the Celebrations Begin

Time Out New York's annual Food and Drink Awards were held in Hell's Kitchen last night and over 100,000 votes decided the winners.  Reader's award Chef of the Year to Seamus Mullen over at Tertulia, Parm takes Best Spin-Off, and Andrew Carmellini's The Dutch wins Best New Restaurant.

What Do You Mean I'm Funny?

The Nomad is the new project from the Eleven Madison Park team.  It opened in the The Nomad Hotel on Broadway and 28th last Monday.  On Friday, to celebrate the end of the week, and the immediate success of the restaurant, Henry Hill Daniel Humm and James Conway Will Guidara star in this Goodfellas-inspired video that takes us through their kitchen and dining room.

Roadhouse + Dale Talde = Pork Slope

Talde was only one month old when we heard the trio behind the restaurant was planning another project together.  It's location?  247 5th Avenue, in Park Slope, in the space that housed Aunt Suzie's for nearly 30 years.  We learn this morning that the new space will be appropriately called Pork Slope, which suggests where the menu draws its inspiration.  Pitchers will also be an option to hold some of the 25 beers that will be available on tap.

Pork Slope will open sometime this summer and be open from 5pm - 4am seven days a week.  Expect an "off the chain rowdy" party to celebrate the night it opens.
